Something I thought I'd mention regarding programs like capture and control software that may be obvious to most but really important.

Always disconnect equipment via the software and exit the software properly, it may be tempting after a session (specially if you have to pack up) to just turn the lappy off and then unplug everything.

An example for me has been EOS Utility, sometimes if I didn't close EOS Utility correctly it would leave a process running and refuse to launch next time. Took me a while to work it out as I was getting no messages giving me any clues as to the issue and just seemed to be random but was due to my lazy closing of the program. So it's always worth checking what processes are running if you are having problems getting a particular software to launch.
