Another Section?

This is something I've been thinking about for a while and held back because it's open to being abused, not intentionally abused, so, maybe 'misused' would be a better word, but lets hear what you think.

Image Clinic

Too many astro forums tend to be too polite with people's images, everyone gets a pat on the back and good image etc etc and sometimes, lets be honest and blunt, some of em are awful! The thing is, the guy who posted it now comes away having learned nothing about what he's got wrong. I'm not saying it's a fault of forums but I think maybe many of us don't want to hurt people's feelings or appear as the bad guy after many have told them it's a good image. I know I feel awkward when someone posts an image and half a dozen people have said it's good, and then I come along and say, "you' re not quite focused and you have onion ringing which you can fix by upping the gain and dropping the exposure a little to compensate, and you also need to do an RGB align in registax"

Now you can see where the misuse point comes in as some people would continually post in the section until they are turning images out like Damian Peach!

OR

Do we ask members for good examples of bad images, pick out the worst ones, say what's wrong and how to fix it, and put those into a section, a bit like a FAQ, then when someone posts an image that has any of the classic errors we can direct them to that part of the section that shows an example and how to fix it?

AND

When people turn out bad images or come across a set of circumstances that cause imaging errors and then find a solution, they then document it in said section along with all details/examples and description of what they did to fix it.

interesting dilemma Dion. I agree with you but there is a balance. For some people, just getting a smudgy shape is a major achievement and they want to share it. Personally, i joined this site because i saw some of the tutorials on youtube, realised the content you have in the shed and wanted to learn. I take way better images now than i did 12 or 18 months ago because i have learned a lot from others. :notworthy: I would not be the least bit offended to receive constructive criticism and suggestions but maybe that's just me.

a seperate section could be a good idea, because we can still all pat each other on the back in the regular sections but if you genuinely want some tough love, post in the critique section :noolook:

i just dont comment on the pictures that are crap ;) . However, a good sharp shot of say jupiter taken with a modest 60mm scope and basic camera deserves praise in my view, even if others can produce superior images with a C14 and expensive RGB kit. we need to support and encourage.

just my tuppence worth

I for one would not be offended by constructive criticism - I am still learning and tips will often help. So a section for image help as you suggest would be useful, posting here would encourage others to offer constructive criticism and suggestions.
However I can see it could lead to misuse and people taking offence. A dilemma as we do not want to get into slanging matches.

I have not posted any of my images for a while except one because I see others and I think mine are crap. So maybe this is a good idea. Tell me where I am going wrong or can improve. To be honest the likes of Rog Aaard and Martin usually do, but I like the idea of a workshop type section.

I wouldn't be offended at all, I know the images I've posted aren't the greatest although you can see what they are. One of my problems was guiding which was down to my naff laptop so hopefully I should get that sorted. One of my biggest problems is with the processing, I've watched videos & online tutorials but for some reason it doesn't seem to sink in. I must have a brain made of teflon... I'm limited to a DSLR & apart from a modded Baader neodymium filter which at an 1ΒΌ" isn't ideal but due to personal circumstances it's all I have until I get back on my feet again. Any hints tips or help would be gratefully received.

Ok so I have posted only 3 images since jioning the shed only because I haven't got the know how, how to do it and the gear to do. it.
Still for when I do finally get to imaging I will not mind the hard headed critics ripping my images apart! as I know I will have learned something at the end.
But do we really need a new section? Why not just simply ask for the critism when you post the image?

I need all the help I can get. Make it so no. 1......

Noticed this guy was quite good with his 1981 C8 and Canon 450D. How does he do it:

I think it would be a great idea Dion

But with one caveat, and that is that those who provide critique must provide a least a reasonable solution or suggestion to help sort out any issues they have raised.
