Unknown object (to me) near Jupiter Night Sky 10/12/12

Hi all. I'm not one for posting usually but I have taken a photo of Jupiter this evening that has baffled me. Due to working late and having an early morning to follow I didn't have time tonight to set up my usual setup, EQ6 Mount and 10" Newtonian reflector. Not wanting to miss out on the great clear conditions over here in Parkgate (West Cheshire) I just grabbed my tripod and DSLR. My intention was to see what a short exposure (5 sec ISO 6400) of M42 would like with a 200mm telephoto lens. To gain focus I pointed at Jupiter 1st as it is the brightest object and took a few shots adjusting the focus to get Jupiter as small as possible (and presumably in focus), once I had done this I re-positioned and continued to take a few snaps of M42 and then returned inside to check my results. When I checked back through the images I had taken I came to one of the focus shots I had taken (attached image) and saw something I wasn't expecting. I checked Stellarium but nothing was identified close to Jupiter. Does anyone know what this oval blue object is? It also appears to have a bubble around it! I know the image is of poor quality, it was afterall a single expopsure of 5 sec at ISO 6400 on an unmodified Nikon D7000. What is really odd though is once I had seen this I went back outside to try to get another image, which I did but none of the subsequent images showed the blue object. Sorry to waste anyones time with this question as there is probaly a really obvious explanation, but unfortunately I dont know what it is! Thanks for reading.

possibly internal reflection in the lens? or mark on lens - is it a zoom lens

Hi there, thanks for your reply. Yes it is a zoom lens 18-200mm. I thought that could be a possible explanation too however on the repeat photos I took with all the same settings there was nothing but Jupiter! The thought process I went through was Lens refraction or airplane but wasn't sufficently convinced be either hence the post!

difficult to tell unless you get it regularly, looks like a reflection to me especially as jupiter is so bright

Do you have any sort of UV filter/dust glass on the lens?

Hi all, thanks for your reply's.

In response:

The lens had a UV0 filter on it.
M45 was to the NE of Jupiter at the time of night I took the image around 22:30. There was nothing obvious to the eye. As suggested I think I will put it down to lens refraction as there doesn't seem to be a logical alternative. :notaclue:

Seriously though, looks like a reflection from the bright Jupiter, though the angle of reflection doesn't point to Jupiter?
Was Jupiter in the center of the shot or has it been cropped?? as the reflection angle probably points to the central focal point of the lens.
