Before going down the EQMOD route, Craig is right this should work but I wouldn't have thought the ST4 cable would cause it to crash when you press the 'loop' button as I can't see why it would be sending a signal down the cable at the point. It would be worth doing a test to rule it out, disconnect the ST4 cable from the camera and press the 'loop' button and see what happens. You might want to repeat the test with a different USB cable to rule that out as well.

The loop button is taking shots every n seconds not video like Sharpcam, you should try taking images from a capture application and see if you get the same crashing issue.

BTW What exposure time do you have set in PHD2?
