Satellite question

Postby Koldo » Thu Jan 30, 2014 1:06 am

Hi,
My question is a theoretical one.

If a satellite is in a stable circular orbit around the earth and then some astronauts attach something to the satellite which doubles its mass, what would happen?

I cannot decide. My instinct says that the satellite would have to move to an orbit further from the earth, and that its speed would slow down. Is that correct?

Or would the extra mass make the pull of the earth stronger so that it would move into a lower orbit and speed up?
