A classic example is M42 which has a huge dynamic range, it is hard to controll the core and process the feint stuff at the same time. What we need is 2 different images and then blend them together to make a composite image. The usual way to do this is to make a set of exposures to highlight the outer bits, so say you capture the subs in 10 min lengths, and then go on to take a set of 3 min subs for the core.
