Plate Solving

A while ago I mentioned Plate Solving and a few people didnt know what it was, so..............
Plate Solving is basicaly a way to determine where your telescope is pointing in the sky by comparing an image from that scope to a known image and calculating the difference.
The referance used is usualy a catalogue of stars using their known position and angle between them. The plate solving program picks a number of stars in your image and measures the distance and angle between them and compares it to the refrence.
To start plate solving the program has to know two things about your setup the angle of the camera and the arc sec/pixel of the camera, so that it can scale the images correctly. So to start you usualy calibrate the software to your setup then you are ready to go....
Capture your image, load it into the software, give it the coordinates of the object, solve it, get the output.
The software I'm trialing at the moment integrates with EQMod and collects the coordinates from it, the solving program will then issue a command back to EQMod to move the mount to the correct position.(still playing with that bit, cloud, cloud, cloud)
