Registering individual files using DSS

Postby martin_h » Sat Aug 13, 2011 2:18 am

For those people using mono cameras with colour filters to produce composite RGB images the individual colour files need to be registerd with each other because when they are loaded in to an image manipulation package such as Photoshop they will not necessarily all line up when merged into a single file.
Photoshop will use the frame edges to align the images, but if the stars in those files have moved there will be an overlap.

We can use DSS to do this registration for us, it does it for us when we stack individual frames to make an image, and it uses the stars in those images to do so.

What I do is to create a new folder and call it something like REG. Into this folder I copy and paste the 4 individual stacks created earlier in DSS ie Red Stack, Blue Stack, Green Stack, Lum Stack.

Now I open DSS and from the REG folder load the 4 files - no need for darks, Flats etc that’s already been done. Tick the ‘Check all’ box then click ‘Register checked pictures…’ A box will pop up, click the ‘Stacking parameters’ button and another box will open, along the top of that box click the ‘Intermediate files’ tab and tick the ‘Create a registerd/calibrated file for each light frame’ box then click OK to close the box, then click OK on the remaining box, ignore any warnings about no darks flats etc and let it run - it wont take long.

When it has finished close the program down….click NO to save image…we don’t need it.

Now when you open the REG folder you will have your original files and a new set ending in .reg ie Red Stack.reg

These are the files you load into your processing package.. They will all be aligned using the stars and not the frame edge.

See the attached image.

One thing to note tho…..next time you use DSS - untick that Create registerd file box or you will have loads of files saved that you don’t need.

EDIT: Make sure that after hitting the Register button that "Stack the Best 100% pictures and stack them"
