Excellent community, videos and help here! :-)

yep all good .. it take practice to sort it all out , its quite a learning curve if you have never used an eq mount before :coffee:

don't think I've ever used setting circles on my mount apart from when rotating RA to the correct hour angle for PA.
Certainly never used them to locate any celestial objects though I understand it in principle.

I guess the Synscan makes the setting circles slightly redundant anyway. I noticed that even with putting Polaris in the cross hairs, then doing a 3 star alignment, the controller located even pretty faint objects (like the Cats Eye Nebula) bang in the middle of fov. Although I'm sure this wouldn't be accurate enough for photography!

As a busy, slightly tech-weary, kind of armchairish amateur, I decided that spending an hour trying to set up my old 8" dob too much hassle (especially when there's wine to be had). So, I sold that weighty kit (those counterbalance weights are a killer), and bought a dinky Celestron Nexstar 5SE, the very able Meade Series 4000 8 - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece, and an overpriced but 'makes things super simple' Celestron SkySync GPS module. Please don't snigger, all you hardcore experts out there, but now I can get everything up and running in 10 minutes and still get very decent views of tons of impressive stuff out there. I can piggy back a GoPro for tracked timelapse, and still have time to enjoy a glass or two of wine... I'm now really enjoying what it's all about for me :-)

So on my EQ5 mount that has no Synscan would I use the setting circles to navigate? If this is the case and we have established that the setting circles are useless how would I navigate accurately?

Yes we have established the short comings in the mounts setting circles but if you learn to use them properly then you should be in the right vicinity and you can then hone your understanding of the mount and the circles.

This is a decent guide to using the setting circles correctly http://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/featu ... ng-circles

The setting circles on the mount used in this tutorial are far inferior to your EQ5, you just need to learn to get the most out of what you have.

I'm glad I found this page and it wasn't just me with regards to the setting circles on the EQ5, almost thought I got a faulty mount!!
