Hi all.

Does anyone know of any tutorials anywhere on using RA and DEC setting circles on an EQ5 mount as I can't get to grips with it at all. Hopefully something very simple as the ones I have seen are very confusing.

Thanks

Chris

The truthful answer is that they are so inaccurate as to be practically useless. With a few exceptions most dso targets are really quite small, chances are you will miss by the proverbial country mile if you rely on the setting circles Maybe invest in something like a telrad and learn to star hop.

I agree with paraman 100%, the circles on the EQ5 are pretty dire. Dont get me wrong, the EQ5 is a great mount at it's price point, but if it has one weakness, it's the setting circles.

Would someone be kind enough to explain something re setting circles and Polar alignment (Mine's on the flaky EQ5 mount setting circles!)

In Dion's excellent video on Mount Alignment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwJ9O0lFnQs - (about 8mins into tutorial), the setting circle is set to zero, once polaris in the reticule is at the bottom of the view.

If the Synscan handset then indicates the HA of Polaris to set the mount, this allows the real Polaris to be lined up with the reticule image.

The bit I don't understand, is that the mount will not be in the home position. I assume you then do the star alignment and everything is fine? Or is the home position not relevant for this procedure?

Once you have the polar alignment sorted then the mount should be set to home position i.e. weights down, scope up and mount pointing at Polaris.
Synscan will use home position as it reference point, unless the mount is started from this point chances are it will miss its star alignment point by the proverbial mile. To be honest even when starting from home theres is a good chance it will not have the alignment star in the fov to start with and you will have to center it using the handset.

yeah polar alignment and 3 star alignment are two completely different things .. once you have sorted out polar alignment .. you put the scope into the home position .. weights down -scope up ;)

Thank you paraman and hemihaggis. If I understand that right...
1. Polar align as per Dion's instructions.
2. Get Polaris lined up in the correct position in the reticule using alt az bolts.
3. Set to home position.
4. Do the star alignment routine.
Is that's correct? Sorry to sound like an idiot. Trying to get my head round it (literally).
Just need the clouds to part and fireworks to disappear to try it out! :-)

Yes the above is correct, many fail to realise that polar alignment and star alignment are two separate entities. Think of polar alignment as aligning the mount, think of star alignment as aligning the scope.
