Mine was The Larousse Encyclopedia of Astronomy Published in 1966

Thanks for all your input and to see everyone getting nostalgic, it's good for you!
Looks like The Observers book of Astronomy is a clear favorite and Sir Patrick.
Any more in the Carl Sagan camp out there? :notworthy:

When I watched the Horizon guide to the Voyager spacecraft the other day, Sagan did seem very inspiring. Although TBH I never previously heard of him...

I love looking at some of my books from the eighties, the photos make you realise how far imaging has come.
One of my favourites is - The Universe from your Backyard by David J Eicher - He used to do the deep sky guide for the american magazine "Astronomy" which was around before "Astronomy Now".

looking back at some of my old books it's amazing to realise that we can now take better from our own back yards than the biggest scopes of the era.

I'll add my vote to Patrick Moore's observers book.

I'm not sure whether it would help a beginner today, as so much has changed. Many of us spend more time on a PC than outside.
